I believe it’s very important to make a habit of reading your Bible. I mean, if you’re a Christian, how else can you get edified? Yes, you can read Christian blogs, listen to sermons, prophetic words and worship music, but that shouldn’t take the place of personal Bible reading.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: “All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; 17 so that the[a]man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.“
As I read that I see several reasons why reading the Bible is good for us:
1: Instruction – the Bible is full of instructions for us on how to live our life. Some of these instructions may be easier to carry out than others, but with God all things are possible. There is grace available for you for every single thing God asks you to do.
2: Conviction – the Bible really does have a way of showing you where you’re not on the right track with God. Always remember that the Holy Spirit convicts specifically. The enemy doesn’t convict but he brings general guilt. For example, if I lie, the Holy Spirit will zone in and say ‘hey, that right there wasn’t good’, but the enemy will bring thoughts that make me feel like I am not good enough and I’m not a good Christian etc etc. So the point here is that,as you read the Bible, you find that you will start seeing specific areas where you are not walking right. You also get better at knowing when God is speaking to you, because He never contradicts His own Word.
3: Correction – just as you get convicted by reading the Word, you also get corrected. The Bible simply shows you which way to go. It corrects your attitudes and actions.
4: Training in righteousness – the Amplified Bible put it well when it said, “learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately – behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage” I can not agree more. We cannot achieve righteousness by our own ideas and works. Reading the Bible through the help of the Holy Spirit will help you know how to live a righteous life.
All in all, reading the Bible is good for you and for me to. As verse 17 puts it, the Scripture enables men and women of God to be complete, proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work. That means that it will help you live your day-to-day life and to fulfill your calling.
So be encouraged friend, go and read your Bible! If you don’t know where to start, use a Bible plan, or have a go at it with a friend for accountability.
Bless You =)
